About Don't Cry Baby

I lived in the fishing community of Sointula for many years. During the late 80's, spring would find the local fishermen getting ready to head out for their season and the dock would be buzzing with activity, job searches, and local gossip. Once the fishing season was underway, the breakwater would be almost empty and the streets would have a quietness about them that at first was hard to get used to.

For some the separation is lonely, for some it's a time of self discovery, for others a time of promiscuity. However those of us at home decided to occupy our time, the end of the fishing season several months later usually meant a re-adjustment to the way things were. Not always an easy thing.

There are many occupations that bring circumstances of distance that can be challenging for relationships. Rock and roll widows, military families, traveling sales, camp jobs...can all have a sacrificial component when it comes to family life. The arrangement of Don't Cry Baby has intentionally included stops and starts, symbolizing the way that family life stops and starts in these situations.
